Lacrosse attack drills

Attackmen are judged on three things: can you beat your man, can you finish under pressure, and can you find the open teammate. These drills build all three, and most of them work in a backyard alone.

Dodging drills

  • X to the alley

Start behind the cage, drive up the alley, turn the corner. 5 each side. Cue: stay low through the turn, stick protected between your shoulders.

  • Split dodge at the cone

10 splits each way at full speed. Cue: one hard plant step then accelerate — the split is sold with your hips, not your stick.

  • Roll-back re-dodge

Dodge, get bumped by a bag, roll back and attack the other way. 3 sets of 6. Cue: keep both hands on the stick through contact.

Finishing drills

  • Question mark finish

Drive from X up the hash, curl toward the cage and shoot far pipe. 5 each side. Cue: change of pace, not just speed.

  • Inside-5 quick stick

Catch and finish in one motion from 5 yards, 20 reps. Cue: pick the corner before the ball arrives.

  • Corners on the run

10 shots each side at game speed to the four corners. Cue: hands back and hidden, release off the outside foot.

Feeding and two-man game

  • Feed off the dodge

Draw a slide, then hit a target on the crease. 20 reps. Cue: feed with your eyes up the whole time, pass to the far hip.

  • Give-and-go against the wall

Pass, cut, receive, finish. 15 reps each hand. Cue: cut hard the instant the ball leaves your stick.

Common questions

  • What makes a good youth attackman?

Two clean hands and the willingness to move without the ball. Scoring comes later; players who can only go right get shut off by middle school.

  • How do I beat a bigger defender?

Change speeds and attack their top hand. Bigger defenders lose on direction changes, not on straight-line races.
